Looking at the Super Antenna UM3SP SuperMount with SuperSpike (also listed as UM3 SuperMount + SP3 SuperSpike)? Here’s how it compares with the POTA Pounder, using each seller’s published specs.

Quick answer

Choose the Super Antenna UM3SP if you want the lowest price, mostly operate on soft ground, or already own Super Antenna gear like the MP1.

Choose the POTA Pounder if you operate on hard or rocky ground, want a stainless spike, or need M10 threads.

Where the Super Antenna UM3SP does better

  • Lower price: $29.99 on Amazon, and $14.95 at Ham Radio Outlet when we checked (that may be a short-term deal).
  • Longer spike (about 11.4 in) grips better in soft or sandy ground.
  • Lighter overall, because the spike is aluminum.
  • Dealers list a 20 mph wind rating.
  • The plate’s 3/8-16 hole also fits many camera tripods.

Where the POTA Pounder does better

  • Solid stainless steel spike instead of aluminum. Stainless is harder and stiffer, so it holds up better when you push it into hard, rocky ground.
  • Choose 3/8-24 or M10 threads to match the gear you already own.
  • Buy just the plate if you already have a spike, from $9.99.
  • Rated 5.0 out of 5 by Etsy buyers, and you can message the maker directly.

Common questions

Is the POTA Pounder a good alternative to the Super Antenna UM3SP?

For many operators, yes. The POTA Pounder is a good pick if you operate on hard or rocky ground, want a stainless spike, or need M10 threads. The Super Antenna UM3SP is the better pick if you want the lowest price, mostly operate on soft ground, or already own Super Antenna gear like the MP1.

What is the main difference between the POTA Pounder and the Super Antenna UM3SP?

The Super Antenna UM3SP: lower price: $29.99 on Amazon, and $14.95 at Ham Radio Outlet when we checked (that may be a short-term deal). The POTA Pounder: solid stainless steel spike instead of aluminum. Stainless is harder and stiffer, so it holds up better when you push it into hard, rocky ground.

Do I still need radials with a ground spike mount?

Yes, for most vertical antennas. The spike holds the antenna up, but pushing metal into the ground is not a good RF ground by itself. Clip a few radial wires to the mount’s terminals and lay them out on the ground.

What does 3/8-24 mean?

It is the standard thread on most portable HF verticals and mobile whips: 3/8 inch wide, 24 threads per inch. M10 is the metric thread some antennas use instead.
