About this video

Building a multiband vertical antenna for ham radio and POTA activations, from a DX Commander knockoff to the DXPER-T system, a 6 year engineering journey that proves experimentation and creativity lead to amazing results. This is Part 1.

Six years ago I built a DX Commander knockoff. There were doubters, but Callum at @DXCommanderHQ supported me, and that was pretty dang cool. I had no idea where it would lead. Just a dude making youtube videos and stuff.....to this.

Despite the criticism, this video shows how engineering can be fun and produce amazing results if you stick with it. The journey was never smooth, but every stumble taught me something valuable.

From there came the Hamstick Commander, the no-mast Commander, the Performer, and more experiments than I can count. Some were failures, some successful. Each one taught me something. Each one pushed the idea further, and that was never the intention. The intention was always simple: how could I build this? Then evaluate what I learned, then put those thoughts in my tool bag for later.

The result is the DX-PERt antenna system, and this video brings the whole journey together.
The DX-PERt combines three things:

DX Commander. My buddy @DXCommanderHQ has always been an inspiration.

POTA Performer from KJ6ER. Although an elevated vertical is not a unique design, the thoughts and concepts in the Performer documentation allowed me to think outside the standard box. whiteriverradio.com/wp-content/uploads/202…

New Hams / All Hams: The links below are not just references. They are the story, and the story is still developing. Watch them, think about what you see, adapt the ideas to your own situation, and come up with your own solutions. The ham radio community grows when we experiment, not when we wait for someone else to hand us the answers.

Got questions? The answers are probably in one of these videos. Start watching. It may be easier to just ask questions without doing the research, but there may come a day when there is no one around to answer them and you will have to be resourceful. I'm not an expert and I can't answer all the questions...

Notes: 12m was not yet open when I got to the field to test. 0 contacts made.

In Part 2 we will take the DX-PERt into the real world even more. Real testing, real data, and a head to head antenna comparison utilizing 73qrz.com. You will not want to miss it.

Subscribe so you do not miss it when it drops.

Maybe the @ARRLHQ will give me a book, lol.
